Counselling is a collaborative process where a trained professional helps you explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviours in a safe and confidential space. It can help with a wide range of issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, grief and loss, and self-esteem. The goal of counselling is to support you in understanding and overcoming challenges, developing coping strategies and achieving positive personal growth.

Both are trained mental health professionals, but their training and scope differ. Counsellors provide talk-based therapy to help you work through life's challenges, emotions and relationships, often around specific concerns or life events. Psychologists complete university training in psychology and can formally assess and diagnose mental health conditions, and may be accessed via a Medicare Mental Health Care Plan. Counselling is well suited to anyone seeking a supportive, collaborative space to navigate difficulties and grow — you don't need a diagnosis or referral to begin.

Your privacy is taken very seriously. What you share in sessions is kept strictly confidential, and your records are stored securely in line with the ACA Code of Ethics and Australian privacy law. Information is only ever shared with your written consent. The only exceptions are where there is a serious risk to your safety or someone else's, or where disclosure is required by law — these limits are explained clearly at your first session.

Getting started is simple. Reach out via the contact form, phone or email to book your free 15-minute consultation — a relaxed, no-obligation chat to understand what you're looking for and see whether working together feels right. From there, we'll arrange your first session at a time that suits you, online or in person.

Counselling provided by a registered counsellor is generally not covered by Medicare rebates, as rebates typically apply to psychologists and certain other providers under a Mental Health Care Plan. The upside is that you don't need a referral or GP plan to see a counsellor — you can book directly and start whenever you're ready. If you have any questions about costs, you're welcome to ask during your free consultation.

Life happens, and sometimes plans change. We kindly ask for at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule, so the time can be offered to someone else. Cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice, or missed appointments, may incur a fee. Full details are shared with you when you book.

No referral is needed to see a counsellor. You can book directly — including your free 15-minute consultation — without seeing a GP first. A referral is only relevant if you're seeking a Medicare rebate with certain providers, which doesn't apply to counselling here.

Some private health funds offer rebates for counselling depending on your level of cover and the provider's recognition. Cover varies between funds, so we recommend checking directly with your insurer to confirm whether counselling is included in your policy. We're happy to provide a receipt for any claim you wish to make.

Success looks different for everyone. Together we'll set goals that matter to you and revisit them along the way. Many clients notice they feel more in control, communicate more easily, manage difficult emotions better, or simply feel lighter and more hopeful. Counselling is collaborative — your feedback shapes the work, and we'll check in regularly on what's helping.

There's no fixed number — it depends on your goals, circumstances and what you're working through. Some people find a few sessions helpful for a specific concern, while others value longer-term support. There's never any pressure to continue; we'll review your progress regularly, and you're always in control of your journey.

Your first session is a gentle, pressure-free space to get to know each other. Vishwa will ask about what's bringing you to counselling, a little about your background, and what you'd like to achieve. It's also your chance to ask questions and see how it feels. Together you'll begin shaping a plan that fits your needs — there's nothing you need to get "right".

There's no special preparation required — simply come as you are. If it helps, you might reflect on what you'd like to focus on or what you hope to gain, but that's entirely optional. For online sessions, find a quiet, private space with a stable internet connection. Most importantly, be kind to yourself: taking this step is something to be proud of.
